The focus of the research work for the position to be filled is on material and microstructure in the field of innovative, climate-friendly, and resource-efficient building materials and components. The research should contribute significantly to the long-term reliability of building materials, considering physical and/or chemical aging and damage mechanisms. The research program should strengthen and expand the existing activities in the field of material research and development for the construction sector at BAM.

The responsibilities at BAM include, in particular, the strategic, personnel, and technical management of Department 7.1 "Building Materials" leading and motivating a qualified team, actively shaping change processes, and contributing to the further development of BAM's thematic areas, especially in the field of infrastructure.

Other tasks include positioning BAM as a federal research institution by participating in leading positions in national and international research networks and expanding existing and initiating new collaborations with national and international partner institutions.

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

• Providing impetus for and self-acquisition of third-party funding for research projects
• Conception of topics for young scientists and their supervision within the scope of your research activities
• Personnel and technical leadership and motivation of a qualified interdisciplinary team of approximately 30 employees, as well as supervision and promotion of young scientists
• Strategic development of the department in the international context of the departments and thematic areas of BAM
• Active participation in shaping change processes within the division, the department and BAM
• Expansion of existing and initiation of new cooperations with national and international partner institutions
• Positioning of BAM as a federal research institution through participation in national and international standardisation bodies, advisory boards and scientific networks

Your qualifications:

• Outstanding scientific university degree in civil engineering, applied geosciences, or a natural science discipline, and an excellent PhD, along with significant scientific achievements related to the advertised position
• Strong background in microstructure analysis and/or chemistry of inorganic binders, with knowledge of climate-friendly cements and assessment of durability and sustainability aspects is desirable
• Leadership personality with experience in the personnel and technical management of scientific-technical work areas
• Comprehensive experience in the independent processing of scientific questions, successful acquisition of third-party funds, publication and presentation of scientific results and the supervision of young scientists
• Experience in scientific management
• Proficient in English
• Good command of German is desirable
• Experience in committee work, regulation formulation and policy consultation are an advantage, as is involvement in scientific networks
• Team-oriented work ethic with excellent communication behaviour, high reflectivity and willingness to act in a service-oriented manner
• Initiative / commitment, willingness and ability to make decisions, goal-oriented and structured way of working, conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills and assertiveness/negotiating skills

Applicants who meet the prerequisites will generally receive a salary according to BesGr. B 1 BBesO.

In the case of applicants who do not meet the career requirements for federal officials at the time of recruitment, a non-tariff remuneration shall be agreed upon. The probation period in accordance with § 34 BLV and § 31 TVöD shall apply in this case.
