Engineer (f/m/d) in the Field of Micro-Nanotechnology Development

Reference No.: QM 2025/14

At the IFOX institute at HZB, we work on functional oxide thin films and nanostructures in combination with semiconductors for energy-efficient information technology. We focus on material synthesis, detailed structural characterisation using advanced methods and device properties for neuromorphic computing applications. You will work within the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant LUCIOLE (Layering, Understanding, Controlling, Integrating Ferroelectric Polar textures on Silicon) and develop various processes for the production of micro- and nanodevices. These processes will be based on thin film deposition, lithography and etching. You will have access to a high-resolution laser writing lithography tool and an electron beam masker and work closely with a team of motivated scientists researching different materials and devices.

Your Tasks

  • Develop lithography processes for the nanofabrication of devices using optical lithography (at the Technical University Berlin’s clean room), laser writing lithography, and eventually electron beam lithography
  • Develop processes for etching binary oxides and complex oxides (reacting ion etching, Ar ion etching)
  • Develop processes for metal deposition by sputtering or by atomic layer deposition
  • Characterize the processed materials, their surfaces and interfaces by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and spectroscopy techniques (Raman, ellipsometry, XPS)
  • Document the processes in written reports
  • Participate in field-related research project

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, or microtechnic
  • Experience in thin film deposition and characterization method
  • Ability to thoroughly analyze and synthesize data/problems
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiatives
  • Ability to search for new solutions based on literature
  • good written and spoken skills in technical English
  • Computer programming skills (Python or MATLAB...) are desirable
  • Team-oriented spirit

Your Benefits at HZB

  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity and implementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods
  • Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from the HZB Graduate Centre and HZB Postdoc Office
  • Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund
  • 30 days holiday/year
  • Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programmes
  • Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flexitime, part-time, hybrid working
  • And a team that is looking forward to meeting you!

Fixed term contract for 12 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

How to apply

The following documents must be provided for your application:-

  • Letter of application — Please explain how you meet the requirements
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copies of diploma and grades with English translation

We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by 26.09.2025. For reasons of data protection regulations, we are unfortunately unable to consider applications that reach us by any other means (such as email or mail) in the application process.

We very much want our workplace to be diverse, and welcome applications from people with different backgrounds.
